Meet Our Staff

Barbie Windom, Director 

Barbie has been the ASC Director (formerly the University Tutorial Center) since 2005. She is a graduate of NC State (BS, Physics, ’92, and MS, Operations Research, ’95). She is a Raleigh native and married to Troy, a Wolfpack engineer. Their daughter is a recent NC State graduate and their son is a current college undergraduate student. She is an active volunteer for her local church during her spare time.

Wendy VanDellon, Assistant Director

Wendy earned her BA in English from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York; MA in English Rhetoric and Composition from Ohio University; and Ph.D. in Composition from the University of New Hampshire. She has tutored in two different tutoring centers as a writing center assistant, worked with a writing across the curriculum program, taught a variety of classes, and overseen several local publications. Wendy oversees the Undergraduate and Graduate Writing programs. She currently lives in Raleigh with her husband Chad.

Sarah Stokely, Assistant Director

Sarah is a proud NC State graduate having earned her BS in Applied Mathematics in May 2016 and MS in Mathematics Education in May 2021. She began working as a student for the ASC in January 2013 and since then has served in a variety of roles including academic consultant, peer tutor, SI Leader, peer supervisor, and USC 210 Instructor. Originally from Tennessee, she has lived in the Raleigh area for 8 years and currently oversees the SI and Weekly Group Tutoring programs. In her free time, Sarah enjoys cooking, reading, running, and hiking.

Abbey Berkebile, Tutor Coordinator

Abbey earned her MS in Microbiology and her MA in Higher Ed and Student Affairs from the University of Iowa. Although she never tutored as an undergrad she could often be found helping her friends with chemistry and math. Her first full-time position found her serving as both a professional tutor, SI leader, and academic coach for TRiO Student Support Service at Creighton University. Abbey has been with the ASC since December 2019. In her free time Abbey enjoys swing dancing, teaching herself guitar, traveling, and discovering new hobbies.

Maggy Bell, University Program Associate

Maggy has worked for the ASC since 2019 and has been working on campus in various capacities since 2014. Her husband, Mike, works on campus in the Facilities Division. She is currently working on a distance education degree at ECU. Maggy enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, and taking her toddler son to story time at the public library.

Kara Newcombe, University Program Associate

Kara earned her BM in Oboe Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in May 2017 and her MA in Arts Management from American University in May 2019. She then moved to Boston to work as the Marketing Manager for Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, where she discovered that she enjoys helping students. She and her husband, Andrew, got married in August 2020 and moved to her hometown of Durham, NC where they live with their two cats, Tiger and Olive. Kara enjoys hiking, kayaking, reading mystery novels, and trying new recipes.
